Abstract Funding Acknowledgements Type of funding sources: Public Institution(s). Main source(s): Deutsche Stiftung für Herzforschung research grant Background Electromagnetic interference (EMI) poses a risk to patients with cardiac implantable devices (CIEDs) and can result in device malfunction including pacing inhibition or inappropriate shock therapy. Such EMI sources are ubiquitous the modern world. Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) represent such potential source. We have previously investigated driving eCars found that largest electromagnetic field is located along charging cable. New high power chargers deliver higher currents (facilitating rapid recharging), potentially associated greater fields for clinically relevant EMI. This present study aims evaluate this EMI-risk address important question. Methods A consecutive group 130 range CIEDs were recruited participate. After complete interrogation each had their programmed optimise detection ensured ventricular ICD therapies disabled. Under continuous 6-lead ECG monitoring patient then plugged charged four different BEVs (Porsche Taycan Turbo, VW ID3 pro, Tesla Model 3 Audi e-tron 55 Quattro) addition ‘dummy’ eCar (which permitted maximal flow 350kW) cable placed directly over device. During both magnetic was measured. further performed spontaneous reprogramming tachycardia detection. Results In total 561 separate events by one dummy car. The 38.65µT at column 77.9µT. There no incidences EMI, specifically there due oversensing, over-detection. results patient-based 0% (95% CI; - 2.8%) event-based 0.6%). Conclusions Discussion induced during use charger technology BEV despite programming placement being optimised worst-case scenario maximising chance clinical Our suggests very low risk, if any, posed new chargers. CIED should reassured safe. would still recommend not place above maximise safety charging.

Sudden Death in Patients With Cardiac Implantable Electronic Devices.

IMPORTANCE Interrogations and autopsies of sudden deaths with cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs) are rarely performed. Therefore, causes of sudden deaths with these devices and the incidence of device failure are unknown. OBJECTIVE To determine causes of death in individuals with CIEDs in a prospective autopsy study of all sudden deaths over 35 months as part of the San Francisco,...

Perioperative management of patients with cardiac implantable electronic devices.

Many anaesthesia practitioners caring for patients with a cardiac implantable electronic device (CIED) lack the knowledge, experience, and requisite programming devices to independently manage these patients perioperatively. A recently updated ASA task force Practice Advisory presents expert opinion regarding the perioperative management of patients with CIEDs, and the Heart Rhythm Society (HRS...

Endoscopic Electrosurgery in Patients with Cardiac Implantable Electronic Devices

BACKGROUND/AIMS Patients with cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs) undergoing endoscopic electrosurgery (EE) are at a risk of electromagnetic interference (EMI). We aimed to analyze the effects of EE in CIED patients. METHODS Patients with CIED who underwent EE procedures such as snare polypectomy, endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD), and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatog...

Imaging for Infected Cardiac Implantable Electronic Devices

Cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs), having been shown capable of improving the quality as well as duration of life, are playing an increasingly important role in the management of patients with disorders of heart rhythm and/or function. Over the last decade there has been a remarkable increase in CIED utilization; in the United States alone 235,567 new and 101,042 replacement pacema...

Safe and Simplified Salvage Technique for Exposed Implantable Cardiac Electronic Devices under Local Anesthesia

BACKGROUND Skin erosion is a dire complication of implantable cardiac pacemakers and defibrillators. Classical treatments involve removal of the entire generator and lead systems, however, these may result in fatal complications. In this study, we present our experience with a simplified salvage technique for exposed implantable cardiac electronic devices (ICEDs) without removing the implanted ...
